R 18 Classic
Heritage

The R 18 Classic is a modern cruiser with a nostalgic sense of BMW design. It reminds one of the beginnings, of the first cruisers suitable for touring. It also invokes timeless marks of our motorcycle history, such as with the white double lining found on the R 18 Classic First Edition. The heart of the machine is obviously the boxer with the most displacement we have ever built. It stands for relaxing tours and pure enjoyment.

40 years of adventure
Four decades of GS

Ready for any challenge: Since 1980, the GS has stood for limitless adventure and curiosity, both on and off the road. 40 years ago, we presented the R 80 G/S for the first time as the conceptual pioneer of touring enduros, which laid the foundation for a decades-long success story. We are celebrating this anniversary with the special editions of our versatile GS models. The 40 Years GS editions are each a homage to the #SpiritOfGS. They boast state-of-the-art technology, but their design is inspired by the legendary R 100 GS and reminds us of the origins of the GS.

A look at the next 100 years
What will the motorcycle of the future look like?

The 100th anniversary of the BMW Group is an opportunity to look back at the historic early days of the motorised two-wheeler and ahead to the future, where the role of the motorcycle will be completely redefined in an increasingly digital world.

It's the 7th of March, 1916. Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG (Bavarian Aircraft Works) begins operations on Lerchenauer Strasse in the north of Munich. Three years later, Zeno Diemer sets the world altitude record of 9,760 metres with the BMW IV six-cylinder inline aircraft engine.

The small factory will later go on to reach new heights in other vehicle segments. Soon after changing its name to Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, the company begins developing the first motorcycle, long before it enters the automobile sector.

Intelligent emergency call (ECALL).
Rapid aid at the scene of the accident.

In a motorcycle accident, every minute counts. In order for those affected to be helped immediately, BMW Motorrad has developed the "intelligent emergency call" (ECALL) optional accessory. The "intelligent emergency call" automatically contacts the BMW call centre in case of an accident to activate the chain of rescue as quickly as possible and – if possible – to establish initial contact with the victim. In addition, the system can also be activated manually. The use of ECALL systems like these has been proven to enable the emergency services to reach the accident location more quickly.

Whatever the reasons for visiting, they were not disappointed, as the BMW Motorrad community again united – as it does every year on the first weekend in July – to celebrate the joy of simply riding their BMW Motorrad bikes and to participate in the action-packed and fun-filled weekend that takes place every summer for fans of this special motorcycle brand.

It’s become a must-attend event for BMW motorbike fans. Set amidst the stunning mountains of Germany’s Zugspitze, more than 35,000 visitors came from all over the world to celebrate their common passion for motorised two-wheelers. This year’s highlights included break-neck performances by Busty Wolter and his freestyle motocrossers, as well as breath-taking shows by stunt riders Mattie Griffin and Dirk Manderbach, who got the audience cheering in astonishment. The wooden “cauldron” of the Motodrom was all about four roaring BMW R 25s, while tyres smoked and screeched at the drift show in the event arena. Another must-see was the presentation of the new series colours and special paint finishes – thanks to the design range “Option 719”, colourful new combinations spruced up the atmosphere of the exhibition tent. The excitement didn’t die out in the evening either: bands and DJs did their part to keep spirits high well into the night. The event was an all round success, entertaining from the start and ending on Sunday with typical German “Gemütlichkeit” (a cosy, relaxing feeling). Even as everyone started packing up to return to every corner of the world, plans are already in the works for the 19th BMW Motorrad Days, from 5-7 July 2019. Mark your calendars today! We look forward to seeing you.

Best BMW Motorrad Days ever!
They came, they saw, they enjoyed the World of BMW Motorrad.

From ‚first-timers‘ to familiar annual visitors, their destination remained the same: the southern Bavarian town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the BMW Motorrad Days 2019. For some, it was a journey made every year since 2001 to reunite with motorcycling friends; for others it was their first sight of the biggest and best BMW motorcycle festival in existence.

"Everything around us was once designed".
Interview with designer Stephen Kenn about vintage in the modern look.

Designer Stephen Kenn is known for his minimalistic, puristic work. His philosophy: authentic vintage materials with a modern design style. The Californian's "Inheritance Collection" demonstrates particularly impressively how he reduces simple seating furniture down and then stylishly combines it with high-quality vintage materials. Because he is convinced: good design should have the simplest and most functional form and the materials used should carry history and the past into the here and now.

Just beautiful.
BMW Motorrad Days 2018: the community loved it!
