Crafting a feeling.

The BMW Motorrad design process.

Striking characters work in the BMW Motorrad design team. Every designer has their own style and feels at home in their own biker scene. And each and every one of them adds their own inspiration and passion. These different forms are then combined in the design process: they are manifested in each new BMW Motorrad creation. Edgar Heinrich, head designer at BMW Motorrad, introduces the BMW Motorrad design team and the design process.

When it comes to creativity, there are no standards. „

Designing means bringing an idea to life.

The first step of this process is to sketch the idea on paper. After this, there are many other steps such as "Tape Drawing" to define the lines, "Clay Modelling", the moulding of a three-dimensional model out of industrial plastiline, right up to "3D modelling" in a virtual space. At the end of the creative process, the colour and material design with its many possibilities for personalisation are finished.

Uncovering a new motorcycle is a truly special moment: you are standing before the work of an entire team over the space of several months. „

Living and working. Make Life a Ride.

"Those who have taken their bike right to the limit understand which requirements a motorcycle must fulfil", Edgar Heinrich says. For this reason, all designers at BMW Motorrad are passionate motorcyclists themselves. The fact that they work on their machines in their free time as well gives designers the opportunity to implement wholly unique ideas alongside standard production. From modern to high-tech bikes, and even vintage motorcycles, everything is represented in the garages of these creative geniuses. They find out how far they can go in the implementation of ideas on regular trips.

Designing a motorcycle means much more than simply defining its proportions, surfaces and details. „

Suitable motorcycles.

Heritage

R 18 Transcontinental

The R 18 Transcontinental offers you exclusive and luxurious travelling. As a member of the R 18 family it represents BMW Motorrad’s tradition and is deeply rooted in the here and now: its unmistakeable front end with the tall windscreen and the mighty Big Boxer promise a comfortable, powerful ride for miles. The automatic load compensation feature accurately adapts the chassis to the load applicable to the motorcycle. And thanks to it being prepared for customising you can exactly define your R 18 Transcontinental according to what you will discover on every trip: yourself. Simply put: classic #SoulFuel.

Heritage

R 18 Classic

The R 18 Classic is a modern cruiser with a nostalgic sense of BMW design. It reminds one of the beginnings, of the first cruisers suitable for touring. It also invokes timeless marks of our motorcycle history, such as with the white double lining found on the R 18 Classic First Edition. The heart of the machine is obviously the boxer with the most displacement we have ever built. It stands for relaxing tours and pure enjoyment.

Heritage

R 18 Roctane

The R 18 Roctane is a synonym for pure nonchalance. Appearance: Bagger. Comfort: touring motorcycle. Personality: custom factory hot rod. It is driven by the powerful big boxer engine. Ride it and every country road turns into Route 66. Its style is unconventional: black and matt – that’s what joy can look like. At least for those who bring #SoulFuel to life. Bagger outline, dragster seat and midi ape-hanger demonstrate that this is not a bog-standard bike. Want even more rock 'n' roll? The bike ready for customising. All you need to do is own it!
